For Christians, early spring brings the 40 days of Lent. As a kid, I didn’t look forward to it. Lent began with ashes on your forehead and having to give up candy for what seemed like forever! Now, I actually look forward to it. It’s a time to be quiet, reflect and let go of some of the routines or habits that can inhibit true personal and spiritual growth.

This year, I gave up alcohol for Lent. I will admit that I was a little scared that I couldn’t stick to it. Would I have as much fun at social gatherings?  What would I drink for my chill-out wine time or Friday night cocktail? But the reality has been a liberating experience! I found that I was just following old habits about what I thought I needed to feel happy or relaxed. It turns out that I can still have fun and feel relaxed without the alcohol.

What I’m getting at here is that it’s very easy to stay within our comfort zones. They are comfortable for a reason, and change can be scary — I get that. But sometimes, it’s worth it to take a leap, to truly “let go” of the old patterns or habits that keep getting us the same results again and again.

I love the quote by Baron Baptiste — one of my favorite yogis —  “The question is not will I survive if I step out of my comfort zone, but will I survive my comfort zone?”

What is your comfort zone: consuming too much sugar? grabbing fast food? sitting in front of the TV? not offering forgiveness? Are you ready to venture out? I’m here to help — join me live or online for my Spring Blitz Detox and Renew Workshop. You will have the opportunity to try on some new habits that will leave you feeling light and energized! You will be letting go of Sugar, Wheat, Dairy, Alcohol and Coffee and nourish your body and mind with meditation, real live food and gentle movement.

You can start today by making this unconventional fruit salad — avocados and tomatoes are fruits! This is an example of what you will be eating during the detox.

Cantaloupe and Avocado Salad with Honey-Lime Dressing

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbs fresh lime juice
  • 1 tsp lime zest (optional)
  • 4 tsp honey
  • 1 Tbs plus 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp coarse kosher salt or sea salt
  • 1 cantaloupe, quartered and seeded, and cut into 1/2″ dice
  • 1 avocado, halved, pitted and cut into 1/2″ dice
  • 1 cup grape tomatoes, halved

Directions

Whisk together lime, oil, honey, salt and even zest some of the lime rind if you like for a little extra zing. Put cut fruit into bowl. Add dressing to taste and enjoy!
